Hawthorn

The discerning high end Hawthorn market demands an assertive, self-confident architecture, which can also cut across a broad demographic. It relies, as much as anything else, on an enduring material pallet that will stand the test of time, avoids fads and ‘here today-gone tomorrow’ trends. In the first of four speculative properties we have since designed in the street, we have made a conscious effort to carefully select and combine materials that would exude this timeless quality as well as appeal to the tastes of a broader market. Here, stone, zinc and timbers were used along with natural cement render to achieve the tone and pitch we required.

Teasing out as much outdoor living space as possible, and taking advantage of the properties elevated position in the neighbourhood, an extensive roof terrace was included, accessible via an automated glazed hatch 4 metres in length and 1 metre wide, when open, the glazed hatch stands upright one metre high and serves as a glass balustrade when the roof deck is in use. Such has been the success of this method of access, it has been repeated on the other three dwellings in the street that were to follow.
